Senior Electrical Engineer

Fort William, Scottish Highlands

Permanent | Competitive Salary

NT Engineering & Manufacturing are recruiting on behalf of a major industrial manufacturing operation

The Opportunity

A rare and significant opportunity has arisen for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join one of Scotland's largest and most complex heavy industrial manufacturing sites, based in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.

This is a senior technical role sitting within the Maintenance Department - providing electrical engineering expertise and technical authority across a major industrial plant, supporting the safe operation, reliability and continuous improvement of the site's electrical infrastructure.

The Role

You will act as the primary technical authority for electrical systems across the site, covering everything from substations and power distribution through to motors, drives, UPS, control systems and overhead cranes. You will lead and support capital and operational projects, manage reliability improvement programmes, participate in HAZOPs and safety reviews, and provide senior technical guidance to electrical engineers, electricians, technicians and contractors.

This is a hands-on, high-responsibility role in a safety-critical industrial environment where your decisions matter and your technical credibility will be tested every day.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Providing technical authority for electrical systems across the plant
  • Supporting safe operation and maintenance of substations, switchgear, motors, drives and UPS systems
  • Managing power system isolations, permitting and re-energisation
  • Troubleshooting power system and control system issues
  • Leading reliability improvement projects and RCA investigations
  • Developing preventive, predictive and condition-based maintenance strategies
  • Managing electrically biased capital projects from concept through to commissioning
  • Working closely with automation and controls teams on PLC, HMI, SCADA and protection relay interfaces
  • Mentoring junior engineers and developing electrical competence across the site

What We're Looking For

Essential:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Significant experience in heavy industry — mining, metals, power generation, utilities, oil and gas or large-scale manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems — transformers, switchgear, protection relays, motors, VSDs and substations
  • Confident reading and interpreting SLDs, schematics, protection drawings and electrical layouts
  • Sound understanding of electrical safety, isolation, switching and permit-to-work systems
  • Experience delivering or supporting electrical capital projects and commissioning

Desirable:

  • HV Authorised Person certification
  • Experience with electrical reliability, maintenance strategy and root cause analysis
  • AutoCAD, CMMS, PLC, HMI and SCADA familiarity
  • Contractor and OEM management experience

Why Fort William?

Fort William is one of the most spectacular locations in the UK - at the foot of Ben Nevis, gateway to Lochaber and the wider Highlands. If quality of life matters to you as much as quality of work, this is a genuinely rare combination of a serious engineering role in a stunning part of Scotland.
